Who we are

Vet Futures Aotearoa is an industry-wide response to the need to ensure a sustainable future for veterinary professionals. It involves representatives from all key veterinary organisations in Aotearoa.

Our big question is what should the veterinary profession look like in 2040 and how do we get there? Starting in 2022, we are particularly focused on how we move from New Zealand having a shortage of vets and vet nurses to being a well-resourced industry.

Vet Futures Aotearoa is being driven by representatives from Allied Veterinary Professional Regulatory Council (AVPRC); Massey University School of Veterinary Science; Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI); New Zealand Veterinary Association (NZVA); New Zealand Veterinary Nursing Association (NZVNA); Veterinary Council of New Zealand (VCNZ); and representatives from allied veterinary professional education institutes.

This collaborative approach encourages veterinary professionals to contribute to the programme by providing insight and ideas for how the industry could look in the future.

Along with workforce development, the Vet Futures Aotearoa team will look at how veterinary businesses maintain viability, look after our people, and continue to provide the best possible care. Topics such as veterinary wellbeing, education, training and leadership will also be considered.

We invite all vets, vet nurses and allied professionals to share their thoughts with us on the future of New Zealand’s veterinary sector.
